Campello Monti (Kampel in the Walser language, the "tittschu") was founded by the Rimella people, who have been using the territory as grazing land for their cattie since 1338. It has new become one of the Italian Walser communities.
The first documented evidence of the name "Campello" (ab alia territorium de Campello) dates back to 1442. It deals with a nine-year lease of the Capezzone, Pennino and Penninetto Alps, stipulated between the Monastery of San Graciniano di Arona and the Walser colonies of Rimella.
Campello underwent significant development from the middle of the nineteenth century through to 1946, made possible by the nickel mines, which were the only ones operating in Europe for many years.
Since 1993 'Walsergemeinschaft Kampe the Walser Association of Campello, has been promoting cultural and research initiatives aimed at developing and increasing the awareness of Campello Monti inside the Valle Strona.
The annual conference meeting called "Campello and the Walser" held the first Saturday of August, is becoming more and more popular and appreciated between scholars and experts of local history. The reports of the scholars who have participated in the conferences are particularly appreciated.
